Maria Fernandez Sabau: “Connect the Dots”

Maria specialises in the management of cultural institutions. Her tools are strategic planning, policy development and concept definition of new infrastructures. Surrounded on a daily basis by artists, architects and cultural managers, she is a great believer in creative thinking as the most valuable asset for individuals in contemporary societies. With a background in political science and business administration, she founded the cultural consultancy Lordcultura over 10 years ago; her interest in how the cultural sector can be a driver for development took her to Cambodia at the beginning of 2011. While developing her own research she is supporting UNESCO in the field of cultural policy; in her free time she is learning traditional dance and practising her photographic skills.

Andy Hawkings: “Collective Songwriting – Musicians Without Borders”

Andy is an educator and composer, as well as a singer and classically trained guitarist. He has developed his own method for playing the guitar and he is an experienced music teacher. He uses voice, percussion, and tuned instruments to develop the inner ear, enabling students to hear the sounds they want to make before doing so. Andy currently teaches music at iCAN British International School and is the music director at the recently-opened NGO, Music Arts School. He feels fortunate that his work and play are intertwined and interchangeable.

Dina Chhan and Warren Daly: “The Art of Virtual Obsolescence”

Warren helps run a Marketing & Communications firm in Phnom Penh. He is also at the helm of an independent record label ‘Invisible Agent’ ; Excursions into man-machine integration has launched him headlong into the world of dynamic, engaging live electronics. He is always conjuring up larger and more extravagant ideas, so keep your ears and eyes peeled.

Dina Chhan works in a range of media, including painting and sculpture. Themes of life, music and everyday activities have captured her imagination over the past ten years Born in 1984, Dina lived in a refugee camp in Poipet. Huge issues still exist with unexploded ordinance and land mines in this region and her experiences in Poipet influence her artwork to this day.

Ou Virak: “Why We Need to Rethink Human Rights Activism”

Ou Virak is a well known Cambodian human rights activist and intellectual, the President of the Cambodian Center for Human Rights (CCHR), founder of the Alliance for Freedom of Expression in Cambodia (AFEC), and winner of the Reebok Human Rights Award for his civil society campaign for freedom of expression and for the release of human rights advocates imprisoned for criticizing the Cambodian government. His work largely focuses on protecting freedom of expression, information and assembly in Cambodia.

Preetam Rai: “The Unlikely Diplomats”

Preetam is a technologist and an Apple Distinguished educator. Preetam has trained Chinese health workers, Fijian civil servants, Singapore librarians, educators and non-profit professionals from a dozen countries on how to use the Internet to better engage with their audiences. Preetam is always on the move, studying how technology is transforming the way we work and play. He is often invited to help companies and non-profits make sense of Asian online trends. His earlier adventures included starting a newspaper in India and trying to build a gaming device in China. Preetam is online at smarterbysharing.com.

Josh Jones: “Cambodian Coffee: Have your habit help”

In his position at Three Corner Coffee Company, Josh works to promote Cambodian coffee and position it on the world’s stage. Originally moving with his family to Cambodia in 1992, he returned in 2007, and has been honing is language fluency skills ever since. As part of his work with Three Corner, Josh advocates for ethical business, and the maintenance of Khmer culture.

Derek Sivers: “Why you need to fail.”

Originally a professional musician and circus clown, Derek Sivers created CD Baby in 1998. It became the largest seller of independent music online, with $100M in sales for 150,000 musicians. In 2008, Derek sold CD Baby for $22M, giving the proceeds to a charitable trust for music education. He is a frequent speaker at TED Conferences, and his talks have over 5 million views. In 2011, he published a book that shot to #1 on all of its Amazon categories. Derek Sivers lives in Singapore, where he is creating his next company.

Michael Jones: “Reinvent the Wheel! Why copy when you can create?”

Michael Jones started Open Equal Free in 2011, in the hopes of spreading his passion for education. He is working to develop the world’s largest and best database of open educational resources while also working closely with nonprofits in the developing world to improve the work they do. His goal, as the organization’s name suggests, is to make great education Open, Equal, and Free to everyone in the world, especially the developing world.

His Excellency PAN Sorasak: “Bridging the Digital Divide”

His excellency PAN Sorasak serves as the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Commerce. He finished his first degree in Economics in France. When Cambodia fell to the Khmer Rouge, he moved from France to the USA and obtained his graduate degrees in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics.

He felt it was his duty to return to Cambodia and contribute to its development. Since his return, he’s made immense contributions to Cambodia as a pioneer of Khmer Unicode, an advocate for technology for the disabled, and an advocate of Aid for Trade policy.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
